Captain Mama is back! And this time she's not just explaining to little Marco about being part of a flight crew, she's showing him and all of his classmates what that means by taking them on a tour of her KC-135R. Best of all, three lucky After the DD-214 readers have an opportunity to win signed copies of the book before it's released to the public!
Captain Mama’s Surprise/La Sorpresa de Capitán Mamá is the second book in Graciela Tiscareño-Sato's award-winning, bilingual children’s book series. It features the return of little Marco, whose innocent question about his Mama’s “costume” sparked Captain Mama’s story. First in English and then in Spanish, Marco and his classmates are led around the inside of a KC-135R, which I can say from experience is one of the coolest field trips one can possibly take. Following around Captain Mama and the rest of her diverse crew, Marco and his fellow second graders learn terms such as boom operator and Teniente. And then, of course, they get more than they expected – in a surprise I’ll let you discover for yourself.
As in the original Captain Mama book, Good Night Captain Mama/Buenas Noches Capitán Mamá, the book features lots of military terminology and colorful illustrations by Linda Lens. The back of the book also includes activities and other resources, such as a bilingual glossary, for further engagement.
While it won’t be officially released until July 4th, three lucky winners will get a prize package that includes:
- A copy of Captain Mama’s Surprise/La Sorpresa de Capitán Mamá, signed by the author
- A custom embroidered patch of the book’s cover
- And, as a bonus, a signed copy of the original Captain Mama book, Good Night Captain Mama/Buenas Noches Capitán Mamá, and its matching patch!
Entrants may enter as often as they like between June 1st and June 15th. At the close of the contest, three lucky entries will be chosen at random to receive the prize package, mailed to them directly by the author!
